Dining out has become a regular part of most people’s lifestyle. Whether we have had a busy day at work and are too tired to cook a big dinner, or are looking to spend time with friends and family, eating at a restaurant has become a quick and easy way to get a delicious meal without the hassle of cooking and cleaning up after the meal. In recent years, more people have embraced a healthier lifestyle so their eating habits have undergone many changes. People are no longer grabbing a cheeseburger and fries for dinner. Most people are now looking for healthier meals when they dine out, not just for themselves, but also for their children.

Because more people want healthy food choices when they dine out such as foods that are low in calories and fat, the best restaurants are now including healthy foods on their menus. Ingredients are more natural and dishes are being prepared so they are low in salt, fat, calories, and sodium. The best restaurants are now offering dishes that are ‘heart healthy.’ This means that the meals that are prepared do not contain fat and salt so that health conscious consumers can keep their cholesterol levels low. As well, the best restaurants will offer foods that are low in fiber. Ways in which restaurants offer healthy alternatives include: offering sugar substitutes, salads, baked or broiled foods instead of fried or deep fried food, fresh fruits and vegetables, decaffeinated coffee, fruit juices, milk, fish, and whole grain breads. As well, the best restaurants will offer a ‘heart healthy’ menu where they will provide the calories and fat for each healthy dish on the menu that allows diners to pick a dish that meets their health needs. They will even offer healthier appetizers instead of the traditional deep fried foods that are served as appetizers. Fresh veggies and dip, fruit dishes, and healthy soups are often offered as a healthier appetizer alternative.

Many people are now trying to decrease their red meat intake or cut meats out of their diet altogether. In response to this change in consumer eating habits, some of the best restaurants are offering vegetarian menus to meet their customers’ demands. Restaurants will offer delicious and flavorful vegetarian meals that will satisfy anyone looking for a satisfying meal that does not contain any meat. Many restaurant meals will provide rich sauces that are high in fat and calories. To make their sauces healthier, the best restaurants will create delicious and flavored sauces that are low in salt, calories, and fat. There are many ways of preparing healthy sauces using healthy ingredients that are bursting with flavor. The best restaurants with the best chefs are very creative with coming up with delicious healthy sauces. They will also give diners the option of substituting an unhealthy part of the meal with a healthy dish. For instance, one should have the option of substituting fries with a salad or baked potato.

With the increasing rise of obesity rates in our society, the health implications have led many people to adopt a healthier lifestyle. The best restaurants have responded to these consumer trends and are now offering healthier and tasty meals.

While the restaurant industry can be difficult to succeed in, the numbers that are out there are just a bit misleading. Yes more restaurants fail than succeed, but that is more because the people that are opening up restaurants have no idea what they are doing. How many times have we heard about movie stars that open a hot spot and it goes belly up less than 2 years later? Today, it is even more competitive and knowing the benefits of restaurant franchise can give a future restaurant owner a leg up on the competition.

Known Brands – for just about any concept that is out there, there is also a franchise that is available. Salad Works, McDonald’s and Outback are all perfect examples of brand names for restaurants that are filled all the time. Normally, when people have an option, they will go with a proven brand versus risking spending their money at a place that is a risk.

National Advertising – when a restaurant owner decides to step out on their own, everything that they do to promote the restaurant falls into their lap. A franchise operator has the benefit of national advertising that is taken right out of the franchise fees. This gets the restaurant name in the spotlight and keeps it there.

Success – there are far fewer franchise failures than there are Mom and Pop failures. There is an enormous amount of research that goes into deciding the right locations for restaurants and very few times will a place like McDonald’s open a location in a bad spot. The owner is the one that benefits from all of their corporations hard work.

Knowledge – this may be the number one reason that most restaurants fail. People think that they can have a snappy concept and it will work and they know nothing about ordering, labor percentages, product yields and shelf life. Franchises educate their owners and some go as far to have their own universities that must be graduated from.

Money, Money, Money – getting a loan from a bank is almost impossible for a restaurant owner unless they can prove without a doubt that their concept has a chance of working. When dealing with a franchise, the model for success is already in place and this promotes confidence in the lending institutions. Some companies will also work out financing themselves and in essence, back their own restaurants.

Product Quality – the independent restaurant owner is literally at the mercy of their suppliers. You get what they give you and unless you are a major account, there is little bargaining power. A franchise has the power of every restaurant across the country behind it and because they will often have an approved vendor list that all restaurants must buy from, the prices are much cheaper and the product is much better.

Yes, the restaurant industry is a tough one to succeed in, but it is far from impossible. Even if a restaurant owner wants to eventually open their own concept, it would be a smart move to open a franchise first and see how restaurants are meant to be run. It may not be the ideal concept for someone, but the knowledge gained will pay of tenfold down the road.

It is no secret that the restaurant industry is a tough one to succeed in. However, when you look at the real numbers, it is because far too many people get into the industry thinking that all they have to do is open their doors, have a good time and the profits will roll in. Take it from someone who has been there, the benefits of restaurant franchise give a new owner a much better chance of success.

Name Recognition – one of the main reasons people will fail in this restaurant industry is because consumers are not always willing to take a risk on an unknown brand. If they have $5 in their pocket and want a burger, are they going to ABC Burgers? We all know the answer to this one.

Paid Advertising – part of each month’s franchise fees goes towards national advertising campaigns. While owners can still do their own thing locally, their brand is already benefiting from the national campaigns that the corporations are putting out. This goes a long way in keeping your label fresh in people’s heads.

Higher Success Rate – franchises are far more successful than the average Mom and Pop restaurant. While companies will occasionally lay an egg, they pour millions of dollars into market research every year that is a key factor in deciding where they are going to open up their new locations. This is more than the average restaurant owner has in their entire budget.

Education – why do most restaurants fail? Because the owners have no idea what they are doing. When opening up a franchise, it is usually mandatory that the new owner work for FREE in another store to learn the business. Companies actually have series of classes in place that culminate in a 2 week course at Burger University to make sure that the owner is as prepared as can be when they open their doors.

Financing – without a great business plan and a ton of research, the average person will not be able to get any significant financing from banks in the restaurant industry. Add a franchise to the equation and many options are now available. Banks are more familiar with the names and the overall company success will go a long way in influencing their final decision.

Quality Control – if a person is operating as an independent, it is up to them to monitor the quality of the products that they are getting and to land their own deals. A franchisee has the backing of their brand behind them and will more than likely already have suppliers lined up. Not only that, but the corporation will run inspections of the suppliers from time to time to ensure that they are keeping up expected standards.

While the restaurant industry is one that will generally make people’s eyes roll when the subject of investing is brought up, it is an unfair stereotype that is based on the lack of knowledge that many restaurant owners have. Running a restaurant is a lot of work and takes a true passion for the industry to be successful. Operating a franchise will give you the knowledge and support that can bring people one step closer to running a successful operation.

The restaurant industry as a whole is one of the toughest things to get into. While the failure rate is high, it is not so much the industry as it is the people that are investing in it. Many think it will be fun and delve into their own restaurant without doing the proper research or having the proper knowledge. It would not matter what industry they were going in, they would fail. Because of the competitive market, franchises are some of the safest bets in today’s economic market. Here are a few benefits of restaurant franchise operations.

Brand Recognition – because money is so tight for so many people these days, people want to know what they are getting for their dollar. Someone is more likely to go to McDonald’s for a burger than they would Joe’s Burger Shack simply because they know the product. Do not ever underestimate name recognition in this niche.

Advertising – while it is up to the individual owners to do their own local advertising, restaurant franchises benefit from the national advertising that is done by the main corporation. This will continue to keep that brand in the focus and may be responsible for people getting off of their couch or stopping by on their way home from work.

Better Chance of Success – franchises as a whole are far more successful than Mom and Pop style restaurants. The amount of research that goes into settling on a location is staggering and companies like McDonald’s, Burger King, Outback and Houlihan’s will spend more money doing demographic studies than most people have in their overall budget. They want to make sure that the location will be successful before it ever opens its doors.

Training – when a Mom and Pop restaurant is opened, all training and knowledge is the sole responsibility of the owner. When opening a franchise, the owner will more than likely have had to work in a restaurant for at least a year and will receive training about every aspect of the business from the corporate trainers. This education will be invaluable towards the success of the restaurant.

Financing – getting a loan is never an easy process, but when opening a franchise, it is much less difficult. The banks will generally be more comfortable going with a proven model. There may also be the option to borrow directly from the restaurant corporation itself. In many cases, they will put up some investment money and raise the franchise fee as their interest rate. There are plenty of options to pursue.

Product Control – a normal restaurant will have to set up all of their contracts with vendors and if the owner does not know what they are doing, this can be a huge area of loss as they will get everything that they can out of someone given the opportunity. Most franchises have approved suppliers that can be purchased off of and prices are more or less negotiated already. Everyone is paying the same thing and the corporation monitors the quality control. This is a huge burden that is off of the owners shoulders.

Restaurants get a very bad rap in the business world, but this is more because people that open them have no idea what the industry really is. The amount of work that goes into opening and operating a successful restaurant is fairly significant. Opening a franchise will give you more training and a proven model of success to help you succeed in an industry where most people fail.

One of the key tenets of business is having the right location. Anyone has any knowledge of market knows well the mantra – location, location, location. When it comes to restaurants this issue is even more important. In fact, it is so crucial to the ultimate success of the restaurant, it is recommended that this be looked at in the early planning stages. Not only is success hinged on where you have your restaurant, the location can also influence how the restaurant is run. At the heart of the decision is also the comfort and convenience of those whom the restaurant will serve.

Important Factors in Choosing a Restaurant Location
There are probably many elements which can come into play when planning to establish a restaurant. One of the most important ones is the relevant zoning laws in a particular area. The size of the building should also be assessed to ensure that it can accommodate the restaurant. Planning should take into consideration the fact the restaurant could grow as it builds a name for itself. Bathroom facilities should also be looked at to ensure the comfort and convenience of customers. Other factors which will influence the choice of location are:

•	Parking – nobody likes to go anywhere and have trouble parking their car. When choosing a restaurant location ample parking should be among the top priorities. Not all buildings have their own parking lots, but there should at least be public parking facilities close to the building. Another option is to rent parking spaces for the restaurant’s customers. Parking should be safe and secure also.
•	Population – no business can survive without the customer base to support it. This is especially true of restaurants, some of which have been known to fold in the first few months of operation. It is best to choose a location in short driving or walking distance to homes or apartment buildings, or busy business districts.
•	Site popularity – it is important that your restaurant be located in a well known area that is easily accessible. This is particularly helpful for the delivery companies you will be dealing with as well. When promoting your restaurant, the ability to mention an area that is well known can only be a plus for the business. The restaurant should be easy to find, especially for new customers who may not be familiar with the area.

While customer convenience is at the forefront when planning almost any type of business there are added elements with a restaurant. The location must be clean, both inside and out. The size of the building must easily facilitate the rigid routines that go into keeping a spotless restaurant.

Before the restaurant can be set up, the building must meet all applicable safety and health laws. Once the location is chosen, all the other aspects of setting up the restaurant will most likely fall into place. Rest assured that when you make the effort to make your customers happy, it will be evident. Diners will only be too happy to come to a restaurant that considers customer convenience such a top priority.

Being a business owner can definitely be a gamble. In fact, the reason that business owners often make such a comfortable living is because of everything that they put at stake. When someone opens a business their ability to maintain their loan payments and their livelihood relies entirely on one very shaky variable: the success of their company. Business ownership is a much different world than that of the steady, predictable paycheck, but, for those business owners that succeed, the payoff is definitely worth it. Entering the world of entrepreneurship is often stressful and disconcerting, but it doesn’t have to be.

Opening a franchise is a fantastic way to stand on the shoulders of giants. Franchise owners tell a totally different story than regular business owners, and it’s often one of all but effortless success. When it comes to franchises, the products, services, business model and corporate culture are tried and true, which eliminates almost all of the risk normally associated with business ownership. The very tangible benefits of owning a franchise let you relax in the confidence afforded by a product that is proven to perform dependably.
Financial institutions that trust your operation

Opening a restaurant franchise isn’t only a great idea because of the risk that it saves you, it’s also a business venture that financial institutions smile upon, which makes your path to securing business loans an easy one. Banks trust the performance of franchise restaurants, and given you can demonstrate the ability to operate the business to the franchise’s standards, they’re certain to approve your loans. With a restaurant franchise, you won’t have to worry about selling a loan officer on your idea, they’ll be happy to invest in a practical business venture with a track record of success.
Customers that know your products

When you become a restaurant franchise owner, you don’t just get a business that performs out-of-the-box, you get a solid, pre-existing customer base, too. Customers of franchise restaurants don’t distinguish between different restaurant locations – to them, every location is a beacon for food they love and service they trust. You can rely on the rapport that the franchise itself has fostered with your customers, and reap the rewards of eager customers in the form of immediate and sustained revenue. As the owner of a franchise restaurant, you won’t have to worry about time and money consuming business building that’s normally required to establish a customer base; your customers will be lining up to patronize your restaurant as soon as you open it.

Support that you can rely on

When you open a restaurant franchise, it’s important to the image and profitability of the franchise itself that you succeed. This means that they’re willing and eager to provide you with strategies for success in the interest of both parties. Owning a franchise isn’t the same solo mission that normal business ownership is. With your new restaurant franchise you can count on the support of your trusting financial institutions, your loyal and pre-existing customers, and of course, the ever-interested

A restaurant can have the most beautiful lounge, the most ambient dining room, the freshest and most delectable menu items and the highest standard of customer service, yet still fail. If customers cannot easily reach your restaurant’s location (or find it) then all your efforts will be for naught. The most successful restaurants and eateries are those that have succeeded in their site selection process. Knowing what to look for in terms of location can help you pave the way toward a successful restaurant and avoid some common pitfalls.

Visibility and Accessibility (Foot Traffic)
In order to go eat at a restaurant, people have to know the restaurant is there. Your marketing efforts will work toward this end, but location visibility is also crucial. This is why property prices in downtown districts and developed strips are higher than other areas. They offer a level of visibility that can bring in a great deal of walk-in business, also commonly referred to as ‘foot traffic.’

Accessibility is also very important. The reason major restaurant chains are often located near highways and freeway exits is that such locations allow for greater accessibility for customers. Motorists can get to the restaurant without fighting traffic or driving out of their way. Most successful restaurant locations (but not all) are easy to find and reach.
Another important accessibility factor is parking. In order for your restaurant location to be truly accessible, it must have adequate parking. If a location you are considering does not have its own parking lot, it must be near public parking.

Detailed Local Knowledge
Local knowledge is very important in identifying appropriate potential restaurant locations within your chosen trade area. At a minimum, the area must have a significant and financially viable residential base, include a daytime population source, such as a considerable office concentration, and also traffic generators such as a retail shopping centers, tourist attractions or entertainment venues such as multiplex movie theaters.
Detailed local knowledge of the surrounding area includes factors such as demographics, population density, and income. Daytime population numbers will indicate if an area can support lunch activity; likewise, nighttime population will support dinner activity. For these reasons it is important to include the type of retail and offices located near the site and the area’s overall employment figures.

Urban Trends
The faces of cities and towns as we know them are changing, offering new and useful information for restaurateurs looking for a new restaurant location. Downtown areas of second-tier cities such as Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Detroit and San Diego are shifting toward the big-city 24-hour model set by cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City. The good news is that as business and residential populations head back downtown from the suburbs, office and other workers populate these once-barren central business districts during the day. Likewise, in the evening, residents and tourists descend, attracted by retail entertainment venues.
